I have read and experienced that, “You can do 99 things for someone and all they’ll remember is that 1 thing you didn’t do.”
If you really pay close attention, you will realize that’s how we have been brought up.
In Cricket, a batsman would be celebrated and even awarded Man of Match for that 100 he scored. And no one would remember the number of times he got out scoring 99. What is worse, we even brand it as “Nervous 90s”, when he failed to get to 100- as if it was nothing short of a disaster.
Back home, If Kids don’t score perfect 100; we look for ways and means to help improve for the next test instead of celebrating the hard work that got them thus far. If the lady of the house, just once forgets to put salt in dal, all hell will break lose, forgetting all the awesome cooking she did for 99 times.
In relationships, many a times, we ask for favors from friends or colleagues and doesn’t matter 99 times they helped us; it’s that 1 time we didn’t get the help- we would remember and recall that 1 incident for rest of our lives. I have to ask myself but he did 99 things for me, how could I forget ? And why can’t I forgive. Even Lord Krishna pardoned 100 sins of Shishupaal before executing him. If the God could be so generous and pardon 100 mistakes, can’t we humans forgive even one?
Not just others even to ourselves we are so unforgiving. Few years ago, I had a minor accident and I stopped driving car for couple of days. Only to realize how that feeling made it more worse for me; till I decided to let go and got back into the driving seat. Took me time to forgive myself. Forgiving myself was even more difficult then forgiving others I felt.
Someone once told me, “one of the most courageous decision you will ever make is to Let Go.” I’d say don’t do it for others, do it for yourself. See how happy it makes you when you forgive and forget that 1 failure or 1 mistake, and celebrate 99 successes. It’s when we start recognizing the Power of 99, we will truly find that inner happiness & peace.
