Chana Dal Fara Recipe

Made from nutirious chana dal, veggies and cooked by boiling; Dal Fara is a unique recipe from UP, Bihar but has versions of it in different parts of the country. Also known as Bhakosa, Gojha, Pithi, such a unique nutirious & healthy dish enjoyed all over Indian households.

How to make Chana Dal Fara?


  • 1 cup wheat flour.
  • 3 tbs semolina (suji/ rava).
  • Salt as per taste.
  • 2 tsp + 1 tbs oil / ghee.
  • Water.
  • 1 cup bengal gram split (chana dal).
  • 1 chopped green chilli.
  • 1 chopped small ginger knob.
  • 1 finely chopped onion.
  • Finely chopped coriander leaves.
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder (haldi).
  • Some coriander seeds (dhaniya) powder.
  • 1/2 tsp ajwain.
  • 2 pinch asafoetida powder (hing).
  • 1/2 tsp aamchur powder.
  • Red chilli powder (as per taste).
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds (rai).
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera).
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala.


How to make?

  • Take a mixing bowl.
  • Add wheat flour.
  • Add 3 tbs semolina (suji/ rava).
  • Add salt as per taste.
  • Add 2 tsp oil / ghee.
  • Add water gradually and knead a dough
    (as paratha dough).
  • Cover bowl with a plate and rest for a while.
  • Further to prepare stuffing.
  • Take a mixer jar.
  • Add 1 cup bengal gram split (chana dal soaked in water 4-5 hours).
  • Add 1 chopped green chilli.
  • Add 1 chopped small ginger knob.
  • Churn to make a coarse mixture.
  • Tranfer in a mixing bowl.
  • Add 1 finely chopped onion.
  • Add finely chopped coriander leaves
    (add vegetables as per your choice).
  • Add 1/2 tsp turmeric powder (haldi).
  • Add some coriander seeds (dhaniya) powder.
  • Add 1/2 tsp ajwain (gives nice taste).
  • Add a pinch of asafoetida powder (hing).
  • Add 1/2 tsp aamchur powder.
  • Add red chilli powder (as per taste).
  • Add salt as per taste.
  • Mix everything well with spoon.
  • Further roll out few balls from the dough prepared.
  • Apply some oil on rolling board.
  • Take a ball and flatten it with the help of rolling pin.
  • Make a small roti.
  • Add 2 tsp of stuffing on half of the roti.
  • Brush some water on the other side.
  • Wrap the roti covering the stuffing.
  • Press gently on corners
    (Make more Pharas with the same procedure).
  • Now to cook Dal Phara.
  • Heat up the pan and boil water.
  • Add all of them one by one.
  • Cover the lid.
  • Cook for 15 min on high heat.
  • Then take them on seiver (to remove excess water from it).
  • Cut into pieces.
  • To fry them, heat up a pan.
  • Add 1 tbs oil / ghee (for tempering).
  • Add 1 tsp mustard seeds (rai).
  • Add 1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera).
  • Add a pinch of asafoetida powder (hing).
  • Add 1/2 tsp garam masala.
  • Place all cut Pharas in pan.
  • Fry them on medium heat until both the sides turn crispy.
  • Take them on a serving plate.
