Khara Pongal Recipe

Ingredients

1 spoon Ghee
8-10 Pepper-corns
1 tsp Jeera (Cumin Seeds)
1 small piece of Adrak (Ginger) finely chopped
1-2 Green chilies
Few Curry Leaves
8-10 Cashew nuts
1/2 tsp Haldi (Turmeric Powder)
A pinch of Asafoetida
Salt as per taste
1 cup soaked Mung dal
1 cup soaked Rice
1 cup water

Method

Heat up the cooker
Add a big spoon of Ghee
Let it warm up a little
Add peppercorns
Add cumin seeds
Wait till you hear the crackling sound
Add finely chopped ginger
And few green chilies
Avoid using red chili powder while making Pongal
Add few curry leaves
Mix it well
The main ingredient of Pongal is cashew nuts
Add Turmeric powder
A pinch of asafoetida
Salt as per taste
Add 1 cup of soaked mung dal
and 1 cup of soaked rice
mix well
Add a cup of water
Close the cooker and wait for 2 whistles
Don't open cooker immediately till it cools off little
Serve the pongal in a bowl
Garnish with fried curry leaves and cashew nuts
Enjoy this traditional South Indian dish - Pongal any time of the day
