Masala Tomato Upma Recipe

A different take to our regular Upma, Tomato Upma is slightly tangier than the regular ones; and I love the texture and taste both. Must try for breakfast or tea-time snacks. Best enjoyed with coconut chutney.

How to make Masala Tomato Upma?

Ingredients

  • 1.5 tsp ghee (saturated butter).
  • 1 tsp urad dal (split and skinless lentils).
  • Some peanuts.
  • 6-7 chopped cashews (kaju).
  • 1.5 cup semolina (suji/ rava).
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds (rai).
  • Pinch of asafoetida powder (hing).
  • Some curry leaves (kadi patta).
  • Some finely chopped green chillies.
  • Finely chopped small ginger knob
    1 medium sized finely chopped onion.
  • Salt as per taste.
  • 3 tbs fresh green peas (matar).
  • 3 tomato puree (or finely chopped tomatoes).
  • 3 cup water.
  • Some cashews & coriander leaves to garnish.

Method

How to make?

  • Heat up the pan, add 1/2 tsp ghee (saturated butter).
  • Add 1 tsp urad dal (split and skinless lentils) and roast on medium flame until it turns golden-brown.
  • Add add some peanuts.
  • Add 6-7 chopped cashews (kaju).
  • Add 1.5 cup semolina (suji/rava) and roast well for 7-8 min.
  • Tranfer roasted mixture in a bowl.
  • Further add 1/2 tsp ghee (saturated butter) in same pan.
  • Add 1 tsp mustard seeds (rai).
  • Add a pinch of asafoetida powder (hing).
  • Add some curry leaves (kadi patta).
  • Add some finely chopped green chillies and a small ginger knob.
  • Add 1 medium sized finely chopped onion.
  • Add salt as per taste and saute on medium flame.
  • Add 3 tbs fresh green peas (matar).
  • Add 3 tomato puree (or finely chopped tomatoes).
  • Add 3 cup water.
  • Bring to a boil then add suji.
  • Keep stirring on medium to slow flame to avoid getting lumps.
  • Cook for 5 min until water is absorbed.
  • Add some finely chopped coriander.
  • Add 1/2 tsp ghee (saturated butter) and mix it.
  • Cover the lid, turn off the heat and leave for 5 min.
  • To serve, apply oil inside wall of the bowl.
  • Place some cashews & coriander leaves at the bottom of the bowl.
  • Now fill the bowl with Upma.
  • Flip the bowl up-side down on a plate to de-mould.
  • Enjoy your Tangy Tomato Upma with Coconut Chutney!!!
