Panchakhadya Modak Recipe

Wanted to make traditional Modak for Ganpati Bappa this year. There is no atta, no sugar in this. And is made from dry coconut, khas khas, dry fruits, dry dates, ghee, cardamom and gur (jaggery). If you don’t have modak mould, then you can make with hands too either in laddo shape or mini-modak shape.

How to make Panchakhadya Modak ?


  • 1 cup dry coconut, grated (remove skin).
  • 7-8 dry dates (kharek – remove seeds).
  • 2 tbs poppy seeds (khas khas).
  • 1/2 cup dry fruits (almonds, pistachios & cashews).
  • 3 tbs + 2 tsp ghee.
  • 3-4 cardamom (elaichi) powder.
  • 3-4 tbs jaggery (gur – finely chopped/ powdered).


How to make?

  • Heat up the pan.
  • Dry roast below ingredients seperately until slightly golden-brown.
  • Roast 2 tbs khas khas for 5-7 min on medium heat.
  • 1 cup dry coconut, grated (remove skin).
  • 1/2 cup dry fruits (almonds, pistachios & cashews).
  • Now add 2 tsp ghee in pan.
  • Roast 7-8 dry kharek (remove seeds).
  • Let it cool down
    Grind roasted coconut & khas khas together.
  • Now grind roasted dry fruits along with 3-4 elaichi powder.
  • Grind roasted dry dates to make powder
    (alternatively you can use dry dates powder).
  • Transfer this mixture in a mixing bowl.
  • Add 3-4 tbs gur, finely chopped (powder is optional).
  • Add 2-3 tbs ghee.
  • Mix everything well with hand.
  • Make Modak with the help of modak mould (with this mixture you can also make laddus).
  • Bappa ka Favorite Prasad Delicious Panchkhadya Modak is ready!!!
