Suji Besan Dhokla Recipe

Since people getting mixed up between khaman and dhokla, have created this hybrid version from Suji and Besan, now you can call it suji khaman or besan dhokla, it’s your choice, I will just call it Suji Besan Dhokla. Enjoy tea time snack with this another hybrid innovation from my Gujarat.

How to make Suji Besan Dhokla ?


  • 1 cup suji/rava (semolina).
  • 2 tbs besan (gram flour).
  • 1/2 cup khatta dahi (sour curd).
  • Approx 1/2 cup water.
  • Small crushed ginger knob.
  • Finely chopped green chillies (as per taste).
  • Some finely chopped coriander leaves.
  • Pinch of turmeric powder (haldi).
  • Salt as per taste
    1/2 tsp fruit salt (Eno).
  • Mirchi powder/ black pepper (to drizzle on batter)
    1 tbs oil.
  • Some rai and safed til.
  • Pinch of asafoetida powder (hing).
  • Some curry leaves.


How to make?

  • Take a mixing bowl, add 1 cup suji/ rava (semolina).
  • Take 2 tbs besan (gram flour).
  • Add 1/2 cup khatta dahi (sour curd)/ add 2-3 drops of lime juice.
  • Add approx 1/2 cup water gradually (or as required).
  • Mix it well and rest the batter for max 1 hour.
  • Then add a small crushed ginger knob.
  • Add finely chopped green chillies (as per taste).
  • Add some finely chopped coriander leaves.
  • Add a pinch of turmeric powder (haldi).
  • Add salt and mix it well.
  • Batter should be thick (as shown in the video).
  • Keep steamer on along with water and stand in it.
  • Then add 1/2 tsp fruit salt (Eno) and mix it well.
  • Pour batter in a greased plate.
  • Drizzle some mirchi powder/ black pepper.
  • Place it inside steamer.
  • Cover the lid with a cloth to avoid water dripping on dhokla.
  • Steam for 10-12 min on medium to high flame, water should be continuously boiling.
  • Remove the plate out of steamer once cooked.
  • Now to prepare tadka, heat up the pan.
  • Add 1 tbs oil.
  • Add some rai and safed til as oil heats up.
  • Add a pinch of asafoetida powder (hing – optional).
  • Add some curry leaves.
  • Mix and pour this tadka on dhokla.
  • Cut it into pieces.
  • Serve with green chutney, ketchup or peanut oil as you wish.
  • So here’s your Yummilicious Suji & Besan ka Dhokla ready!!!
